A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BARTLETT HACIENDA AND THE SAN GABRIEL DUDE RANCH IN ALCALDE, NEW MEXICO.

     WHEREAS, the Florence Bartlett hacienda and the former San Gabriel dude ranch, located in the Espanola valley near Alcalde, New Mexico, and just south of Los Luceros, New Mexico, is a sixty-one acre property of great historic, cultural and natural value; and

     WHEREAS, the Florence Bartlett hacienda and the former San Gabriel dude ranch were purchased by New Mexico state university to house the cooperative extension service to serve the north central region of the state; and

     WHEREAS, the estate was part of the San Sebastian Martin land grant and the property existed under the jurisdiction of Spanish and Mexican governments for over two hundred years; and

     WHEREAS, Florence Bartlett, who was one of the founders of the Wheelwright museum, which now has a Bartlett wing in her memory, purchased the property in 1923 and lived there until her death; and

     WHEREAS, the structures on the grounds include the main house, two smaller homes, stables and an irrigation ditch, which is part of la acequia de Alcalde; and

     WHEREAS, the grounds also include a farm and irrigated pastures, all of which provide habitat for many species of migratory and non-migratory birds, as well as many species of mammals and reptiles; and

     WHEREAS, the legislature has recognized the cultural and historical significance of the Florence Bartlett hacienda and San Gabriel dude ranch facilities by allocating capital outlay funds in 2014 and 2015 to plan and design renovations and improvements to the property;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the Florence Bartlett hacienda and the former San Gabriel dude ranch properties owned by New Mexico state university and housing the cooperative extension service be recognized for their great historical and cultural significance; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the president of New Mexico state university and the department head of the cooperative extension service.
