A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 15, 2017 "NEW MEXICO PHILHARMONIC DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico philharmonic is a direct inheritor of eighty-five years of orchestral music in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico philharmonic was originally established in 1932 as the Albuquerque civic symphony, later becoming the New Mexico symphony orchestra; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico philharmonic is celebrating its sixth year as the New Mexico philharmonic; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico philharmonic is the only arts organization in New Mexico to participate in, and be recognized by, the New Mexico performance excellence awards program for two piñon awards, one in 2014 and another in 2016; and

     WHEREAS, the musicians of the New Mexico philharmonic are also the principal musicians of many of New Mexico's smaller orchestras, including the Santa Fe symphony orchestra and chorus, the Placitas artists series and opera southwest; and

     WHEREAS, as the second-largest performing arts organization in New Mexico, the New Mexico philharmonic provides employment for seventy-four New Mexico musicians and ten staff members while offering concerts that reach forty thousand concertgoers; and

     WHEREAS, the education programs of the New Mexico philharmonic reach more than seventeen thousand public school students around the state each year at no cost to parents or students; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico philharmonic has ninety-seven percent artistic excellence and ninety-six percent audience satisfaction ratings from its audiences;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 15, 2017 be declared "New Mexico Philharmonic Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the New Mexico philharmonic.
