A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING SUCCESSFUL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT THROUGH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS IN THE RECRUITMENT OF THE FACEBOOK DATA CENTER TO LOS LUNAS.

 

     WHEREAS, social media has grown and has allowed communities and families locally and all over the world to better interact and collaborate with one another; and

     WHEREAS, Facebook, a social networking service that connects approximately one billion eight hundred million users globally, announced in September 2016 that it chose the village of Los Lunas as the location of its newest data center; and

     WHEREAS, when the data center becomes operational in late 2018, Los Lunas will become Facebook's fifth United States data center site, spanning eight hundred fifty acres; and

     WHEREAS, the Los Lunas Facebook data center will be one of the most advanced in the world, using the latest computing, storage and networking technologies; and

     WHEREAS, the Los Lunas Facebook data center will use thirty megawatts of electricity entirely from renewable resources; and

     WHEREAS, powering the data center with renewable energy will reduce water use by thirty percent; and

     WHEREAS, Affordable Solar, an Albuquerque-based solar provider, will be the contract provider of thirty megawatts for the Los Lunas Facebook data center; and

     WHEREAS, the successful recruitment of the Facebook data center is the result of public and private partnerships among the village of Los Lunas and Valencia county governments, the economic development community, the office of the governor, the legislature, the public regulation commission, state executive agencies, renewable energy providers and Public Service Company of New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the benefits of this successful economic development project will be multi-faceted and will endure for decades; and

     WHEREAS, the benefits of promoting business development and promoting environmental stewardship provide a worthy business model;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that successful economic development through public and private partnership in the recruitment of the Facebook data center to Los Lunas be recognized; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the promotion of business development and promoting environmental stewardship be recognized as not mutually exclusive; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the mayor of the village of Los Lunas, the county commission chair of Valencia county, the public regulation commission, Affordable Solar and Public Service Company of New Mexico.
