A MEMORIAL
DECLARING MARCH 8, 2017 "FLORENCE JARAMILLO DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, the month of March is national women's history month; and
WHEREAS, women in New Mexico have, and continue to make, significant contributions to improving life in the state and outside New Mexico's borders; and
WHEREAS, more than one-half of the restaurants in this country have women as owners or co-owners; and
WHEREAS, according to statistics from the New Mexico restaurant association, restaurants accounted for eighty-seven thousand jobs in New Mexico and eleven percent of the employment in the state; and
WHEREAS, restaurants employ more minority and female managers than any other industry in the state; and
WHEREAS, one New Mexico female restaurateur stands out for her contributions to the state's restaurant industry by creating jobs, paying wages and being a positive force in her community; and
WHEREAS, Florence Jaramillo had a vision for a restaurant that would preserve the rich traditions of her family and proud culture leading to the birth of Rancho de Chimayo; and
WHEREAS, Rancho de Chimayo was honored as one of New Mexico's culinary treasures, one of only a handful of restaurants awarded this wonderful distinction; and
WHEREAS, Florence Jaramillo and Rancho de Chimayo received the James Beard foundation America's classics award for excellence and achievement in the culinary field and furthered the foundation's mission to celebrate, nurture and honor America's diverse heritage through programs that educate and inspire; and
WHEREAS, Florence Jaramillo and Rancho de Chimayo have stood the test of time and are beloved in the community and throughout New Mexico and beyond; and
WHEREAS, Florence Jaramillo, also known as Mrs. J to her customers, friends, family and staff, is legendary for her original gastronomic creations, warm hospitality and integral role in bringing New Mexico cuisine into the international spotlight; and
WHEREAS, Florence served on the national restaurant association board of directors for many years, representing New Mexico restaurants;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that March 8, 2017 be declared "Florence Jaramillo Day" in the house of representatives; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Florence Jaramillo be recognized for her many contributions to the New Mexico restaurant industry and the celebration of fifty-plus years of being a family-owned New Mexico institution; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to Florence Jaramillo and her family, and the management team and staff at Rancho de Chimayo.
