A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR TO DECLARE APRIL 2-8, 2017 "CRIME VICTIMS' RIGHTS WEEK".

 

     WHEREAS, in April of each year, national crime victims' rights week is sponsored by criminal justice and victim service providers as an occasion to publicize and affirm the rights of those who suffer as victims of violent crimes; and

     WHEREAS, during this week, many public education and community awareness activities are held to help New Mexico residents understand the experience of crime victims and to learn about the many critical services available to those who fall prey to criminal offenders; and

     WHEREAS, violent crime affects the lives of countless New Mexicans each year, and it is crucial that all residents be aware of their legal rights and the full range of services available to victims, for only in this way can the criminal justice system truly function on behalf of the innocent as well as the guilty; and

     WHEREAS, national crime victims' rights week is an important observance to promote greater awareness of crime victims' rights;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be requested to declare April 2-8, 2017 "National Crime Victims' Rights Week" in New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor, the attorney general and the chair of the crime victims reparation commission.
