A MEMORIAL
DECLARING MARCH 2, 2017 "JERRY SANDEL DAY" AT THE SENATE.
WHEREAS, Jerry W. Sandel is a strong supporter of San Juan county youth; and
WHEREAS, Jerry was elected in 1970 to the New Mexico house of representatives at the age of twenty-eight; and
WHEREAS, he served for thirty years and toward the end of his tenure, he represented the single most Republican voting performance district represented by a Democrat in the United States; and
WHEREAS, he is a respected businessman throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, he is a supporter of the boys and girls club of San Juan county; and
WHEREAS, as representative, he was known as a guy that could work with both sides of the aisle; and
WHEREAS, he led the house and senate to support key initiatives, including the stripper well incentive, legislation to set up the oil and gas advanced payment and legislation to assist the state in a budget crisis, and was a leader in the adoption of the enhanced oil recovery legislation; and
WHEREAS, he recognized the importance of Native Americans and their sovereignty by negotiating the intergovernmental tax credits; and
WHEREAS, he worked tirelessly to improve economic growth in New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, he was honored by the house of representatives as "Steady at the Helm", an honor coined by Representative James Roger Madalena in honor of his ability to unify Democrats and Republicans in the house taxation and revenue committee; and
WHEREAS, he served as chair of Governor Bill Richardson's blue ribbon tax reform commission; and
WHEREAS, he was an undying protector of the land grant permanent fund, being fully cognizant of the state's dependence upon the fund for schools and universities and that the general fund should not be dissipated and used as a rainy day fund; and
WHEREAS, Jerry will turn seventy-five on May 25, 2017;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that March 2, 2017 be declared "Jerry Sandel Day" at the senate.
