A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TO CONVENE A WELLNESS EDUCATION TASK FORCE TO STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF INCREASED FUNDING FOR STUDENT AND STAFF WELL-BEING.

 

     WHEREAS, developing and implementing comprehensive wellness policies helps students and staff fulfill their individual potential and brings wider benefits to society and the economy; and

     WHEREAS, physical and emotional wellness is important to the ability of students to focus on learning; and

     WHEREAS, staff well-being is essential to develop and retain quality teachers, leaders and staff; and

     WHEREAS, modifications to rules issued by the public education department pertaining to school district wellness policies could facilitate a well-rounded education for students; and

     WHEREAS, it would be beneficial to study possible legislative changes to existing statutes pertaining to the funding of school district wellness policies; and

     WHEREAS, the establishment of a wellness education task force could further recognition of the importance of student and staff well-being;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the public education department be requested to convene a wellness education task force to study the feasibility of increased funding for student and staff well-being; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the wellness education task force be requested to study modifications to rules issued by the public education department pertaining to school district wellness policies that could facilitate a well-rounded education for students; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the wellness education task force be requested to study possible legislative changes to existing statutes pertaining to the funding of school district wellness policies; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the wellness education task force be composed of representatives of the office of the governor, the public education department, the New Mexico school boards association and the legislative education study committee; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force report its findings and recommendations to the legislative education study committee and the legislative finance committee by October 1, 2018; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor, the secretary of public education, the chair of the legislative education study committee, the chair of the legislative finance committee and the president of the board of directors of the New Mexico school boards association.
