A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE HISPANIC HERITAGE COMMITTEE FOR ITS COLLABORATION EFFORTS IN PROMOTING GREATER AWARENESS, APPRECIATION AND CULTURAL PRESERVATION OF NEW MEXICO MUSIC AND MARIACHI MUSIC IN NEW MEXICO FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

 

     WHEREAS, New Mexico music stretches back centuries, with roots in thirteenth century pueblo music, and incorporates ranchera, Navajo, country and western folk styles; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico music is a unique musical genre, recognized for its up-tempo rhythms, ranchera polka, bolero rhythms and distinctive vocals; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico music has been influenced by many legendary New Mexican artists, such as Al Hurricane, Al Hurricane, Jr., Tobias Rene, the blue ventures band, Gonzalo, Sparx, Lorenzo Antonio and Darren Cordova; and

     WHEREAS, mariachi music has New Mexico's historical influence and instills pride in cultural heritage; and

     WHEREAS, mariachi music is historically known as "la musica de la gente", or music of the people, the common folk, with musical ballads that describe an array of human emotions, including feelings of nostalgia that bring communities together to celebrate life while connecting to the rich traditions of the past; and

     WHEREAS, the Hispanic heritage committee has identified the decline in popularity of both New Mexico music and mariachi music in New Mexico;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the Hispanic heritage committee be recognized for its collaboration efforts in promoting greater awareness, appreciation and cultural preservation of New Mexico music and mariachi music in New Mexico for future generations; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hispanic heritage committee be encouraged to establish a New Mexico arts and heritage task force to identify steps to promote and sustain New Mexico music, mariachi music and film, dance and other arts related to Hispanic heritage to preserve a rich part of New Mexico's historical traditions and culture for generations to come; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the Hispanic heritage committee.
