A MEMORIAL

PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 9, 2018 "MORA COUNTY DAY" IN THE SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, Mora county has a rich and multifaceted history, including indigenous peoples, Mexicano and Hispano settlers and other settlers from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds; and

     WHEREAS, the unique and beautiful landscape of Mora county is characterized by the Sangre de Cristo mountains in the west, which are the headwaters for numerous acequias, and by green irrigated valleys that give way to vast, open plains on the east side of the county; and

     WHEREAS, Mora county is home to several villages, including Mora, Cleveland, Holman, Chacon, Watrous, Guadalupita, Golondrinas, Buena Vista, Ledoux, Rainsville, El Alto, El Carmen and others, as well as one incorporated village, Wagon Mound; and

     WHEREAS, the communities of Mora county have a rich cultural heritage with a long history of agriculture, logging, forest harvesting, hunting and fishing; and

     WHEREAS, farming and ranching continue to be major contributors to the local economy by supporting the livelihood of many families in the county; and

     WHEREAS, several places in Mora county have been federally recognized for their significant historical and natural history, including the Rio Mora national wildlife refuge and the Fort Union national monument; and

     WHEREAS, Mora county is home to two state parks, including the iconic Morphy Lake state park and beautiful Coyote Creek state park, which are beloved by locals and visitors alike for camping, fishing and recreational uses; and

     WHEREAS, several community organizations are working to build upon Mora county's natural beauty and rich history to strengthen the local economy, including the Mora valley chamber of commerce, the Mora valley spinning mill, the Mora county economic development corporation and recently formed cooperatives for agriculture, forestry and tourism; and

     WHEREAS, Mora county is home to an arts and cultural compound that is working to engage the community in the arts and to promote tourism in Mora county; and

     WHEREAS, the youth of Mora county are renowned for their skill and tenacity in school sports, particularly basketball, and both the boys and girls basketball teams have distinguished themselves as district and statewide champions; and

     WHEREAS, Mora county government, which includes elected officials and employees, has been diligent in working to provide services to meet the basic needs of residents and has either completed or made progress on projects such as a collection center, a county complex and a senior center;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 9, 2018 be proclaimed "Mora County Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that residents of Mora county, including various communities and the village of Wagon Mound, be recognized for their history, culture and work to build a bright future for future generations; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the board of county commission of Mora county, the village of Wagon Mound councilors, the Mora valley chamber of commerce and members of the board of the Mora independent school district.
