A MEMORIAL

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF DAVID A. ORTIZ AND HONORING HIS LIFETIME OF PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATURE AND THE CITY OF SANTA FE.

 

     WHEREAS, David A. Ortiz was born July 22, 1953 in the Pueblo of San Juan, now known as Ohkay Owingeh; and

     WHEREAS, David died on September 28, 2017; and

     WHEREAS, David attended Santa Fe public schools and graduated from the university of Albuquerque; and

     WHEREAS, when David first got his driver's license, he served as personal chauffeur to former Governor David Cargo; and

     WHEREAS, David volunteered in numerous nonprofit organizations in Santa Fe, among them, caballeros de Vargas, la cofradia de la conquistadora and youthworks; and

     WHEREAS, David served as a distinguished and dedicated president of the Santa Fe fiesta council; and

     WHEREAS, David's open heart, helping hands and sincere friendship were extended to all whom he encountered, from homeless persons to heads of state; and

     WHEREAS, David hosted numerous foreign exchange students, creating goodwill and amity that those future world citizens took back to their home countries; and

     WHEREAS, David welcomed foreign dignitaries to New Mexico and shared with them the history and culture of la villa real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis; and

     WHEREAS, David was a skilled artisan who crafted beautiful handmade, blue ribbon-winning quilts and clothing for his wife, Mary Lee, his granddaughter, Nayeli, priests and others; and

     WHEREAS, David, an accomplished chef, assisted youthworks, the Santa Fe fiesta council and other groups with his culinary knowledge and services; and

     WHEREAS, David served for over twenty years in the New Mexico senate with the sergeant at arms, assuring that the senate public affairs, judiciary and rules committees were organized and ready for their meetings; and

     WHEREAS, David used his masterful voice to prepare the audiences for these committee hearings; and

     WHEREAS, David will be lovingly remembered by his immediate family members: his wife, Mary Lee Ortiz; his daughter, Ama Ortiz; his granddaughters, Nayeli and Barbara; and his sons, Eliseo Ortiz (Linda), Angel Puertas (Mabel) and Jesus Gomez; and

     WHEREAS, David was respected by senators and representatives alike and was seen as a role model for younger staff members, always doing his job with a smile, day or night; and

     WHEREAS, David served as an historian on the Santa Fe four hundredth anniversary commemoration committee and the history task force, accompanied ambassadors and dignitaries from Spain and Latin American countries and assisted in the final draft of the official fourth hundredth anniversary commemorative publication, All Trails Lead to Santa Fe;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it celebrate the blessed life of David A. Ortiz and honor his dedication and service to Santa Fe and New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the family members of David A. Ortiz.
