A JOINT MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE SANDIA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PARK'S TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY AND ITS ECONOMIC, SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO NEW MEXICO AND THE NATION.

 

     WHEREAS, the Sandia science and technology park was established in 1998 through a partnership consisting of Sandia national laboratories, the city of Albuquerque and Sandia science and technology park development corporation; and

     WHEREAS, other key partners include the Albuquerque public school district; Bernalillo county; the mid-region council of governments; the state land office; public service company of New Mexico; the state of New Mexico; union development corporation; the United States department of energy; the United States economic development administration; and New Mexico's congressional delegation; and

     WHEREAS, the Sandia science and technology park is a master-planned technology community adjacent to Sandia national laboratories and Kirtland air force base and consists of over three hundred acres of land containing twenty-six buildings and forty-seven companies and organizations; and

     WHEREAS, the Sandia science and technology park was founded to enable joint research and development, commercialize technologies, develop local and national businesses, provide convenient supply channels and generally promote economic development; and

     WHEREAS, the Sandia science and technology park's success in accomplishing its purposes is demonstrated by its significant social and economic contributions to the city of Albuquerque, Bernalillo county and the state of New Mexico, including three hundred eighty-four million eight hundred thousand dollars ($384,800,000) in total investments, both public and private; three billion one hundred million dollars ($3,100,000,000) in taxable personal consumption; twenty-two million five hundred thousand dollars ($22,500,000) in tax revenue for the city of Albuquerque; one hundred twenty-three million four hundred thousand dollars ($123,400,000) in tax revenue for the state of New Mexico; five billion four hundred million dollars ($5,400,000,000) in wages and salaries attributable to park activities; and for 2017, an average salary of ninety-eight thousand dollars ($98,000) per year for each full-time job in the Sandia science and technology park versus the forty-six-thousand-dollar ($46,000) average salary for each full-time job in the Albuquerque metropolitan area; and

     WHEREAS, the Sandia science and technology park was one of the first research parks developed in connection with a national laboratory; and

     WHEREAS, the Sandia science and technology park is internationally recognized for its high-quality, innovative programs and its overall success and has served as a model program for numerous other laboratories and universities in the United States;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the leadership, accomplishments and contributions of the Sandia science and technology park and its management, members and partners be recognized; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor, the chair and vice chair of the legislative finance committee, the director of the legislative finance committee, the secretary of economic development, Sandia national laboratories, the Sandia science and technology park development corporation, the mayor of Albuquerque, the Bernalillo county board of county commissioners and the members of the New Mexico congressional delegation.
