A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE STATE TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION TO RENAME THE GEORGE RINALDI, SR. MEMORIAL BRIDGE ON UNITED STATES ROUTE 550 OVER THE RIO GRANDE IN BERNALILLO TO THE GIOVANNI GIORGIO RINALDI BRIDGE.

     WHEREAS, requests for the designation or dedication by name of any department of transportation bridge are submitted to the state transportation commission for approval; and

     WHEREAS, a requested designation by name is intended as a memorial to an event, a person or persons of historical significance or intended as an honor to a person or persons of national esteem; and

     WHEREAS, state transportation commission records show that the New Mexico house of representatives passed House Memorial 14 in 1955 requesting that bridge 1736 be designated as the George Rinaldi, Sr. memorial bridge, and the former state highway commission concurred; and

     WHEREAS, action was not taken on the dedication of the bridge until February 21, 1986, when the state highway commission ordered the dedication of former bridge 1736 on United States route 550 over the Rio Grande in Bernalillo as the George Rinaldi, Sr. memorial bridge; and

     WHEREAS, a plaque dedicating the bridge to George Rinaldi, Sr. was removed or stolen from the bridge several years ago; and

     WHEREAS, the family of George Rinaldi, Sr. is requesting that the plaque be replaced and that the replacement plaque reflect his given name, Giovanni Giorgio Rinaldi; and

     WHEREAS, Giovanni Giorgio Rinaldi was the first Rinaldi in New Mexico and, because people had difficulty pronouncing his name, he was often called George;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state transportation commission be requested to rename the George Rinaldi, Sr. memorial bridge on United States route 550 over the Rio Grande in Bernalillo to the Giovanni Giorgio Rinaldi bridge; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a plaque reflecting the name change be installed at the bridge dedication site; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the state transportation commission and the family of Giovanni Giorgio Rinaldi.
