A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 6, 2019 "YOUNG FARMERS AND RANCHERS DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico farm and livestock bureau has been the voice of agriculture in New Mexico since 1917; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico farm and livestock bureau is an independent, voluntary, grassroots organization that advocates for all aspects of agriculture to ensure a sustainable future; and

     WHEREAS, the young farmers and ranchers program is part of the New Mexico farm and livestock bureau, providing training to young people for leadership and development roles in agriculture and fostering young farmers and ranchers throughout all agricultural industries; and

     WHEREAS, beginning farmer and rancher development programs create opportunity for thousands of young adults; and

     WHEREAS, millennials account for more than two hundred fifty thousand farmers in the United States; and

     WHEREAS, more than twenty percent of all farmers in the United States are beginning farmers; and

     WHEREAS, there are over twenty-four thousand farms and ranches in New Mexico that span more than forty-three million acres; and

     WHEREAS, five percent of farmers and ranchers in New Mexico are under the age of thirty-four, totaling approximately one thousand two hundred young farmers and ranchers; and

     WHEREAS, the legislature supports and encourages the young farmers and ranchers of New Mexico;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that in recognition of the contributions of young farmers and ranchers to the state, February 6, 2019 be declared "Young Farmers and Ranchers Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all young farmers and ranchers in the state be recognized for working tirelessly to provide New Mexico, the United States and world residents with food, fuel and fiber; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the director of the New Mexico department of agriculture.
