A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 8, 2019 "ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, alpha kappa alpha sorority, incorporated, was founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard university as the first Negro Greek-letter sorority; and

     WHEREAS, the mission of alpha kappa alpha sorority, incorporated, is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and alleviate problems concerning girls and women to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life and to be of "service to all mankind"; and

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico maintains an award-winning graduate chapter of alpha kappa alpha sorority, incorporated, known as the iota xi omega chapter; and

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico maintains an undergraduate chapter of alpha kappa alpha sorority, incorporated, known as the tau phi chapter; and

     WHEREAS, the iota xi omega and the tau phi chapters join the south central regional director, Katina Semien, and other chapters in the sensational south central region and across the globe in launching new dimensions of advocacy and political action; and

     WHEREAS, this advocacy and political action will be focused on the program's five target areas of educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening, environmental ownership and global impact; and

     WHEREAS, alpha kappa alpha sorority, incorporated, continues to be a voice, through voter education, mobilization and registration efforts, to drive effective change at the community level;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 8, 2019 be recognized as "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the past, present and future members of this illustrious sorority who uphold its standards, who are committed to its mission and who dutifully serve its community be honored; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the alpha kappa alpha sorority, incorporated, the university of New Mexico's iota xi omega chapter and the tau phi chapter.
