A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE CULTURAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT TO STUDY THE APPROPRIATE NAME OF THE CURRENT CORONADO HISTORIC SITE.

 

     WHEREAS, the Coronado historic site and the ruins of the Kuaua Pueblo are located in Bernalillo, New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the Coronado historic site is a state historic site under the imprimatur of the board of regents of the museum of New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, museum boards within the cultural affairs department establish policy, determine the mission and development of the museum and exercise trusteeship over the collections of each individual museum; and

     WHEREAS, the complex historical nature of the Coronado site includes multiple archaeological sites, peoples and cultures, the Spanish presence dating from the Coronado expedition and subsequent developments over the last four centuries; and

     WHEREAS, renaming the Coronado historic site has been discussed by differing parties with differing interests; and

     WHEREAS, active engagement with multiple interested constituencies is warranted to work out an appropriate new name for the Coronado historic site;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the cultural affairs department be requested to initiate an active engagement with the relevant constituencies on the future renaming of the Coronado historic site; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the engagement process follow New Mexico state statutes at the direction of the board of regents of the museum of New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of cultural affairs and the president of the board of regents of the museum of New Mexico.
