A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is the state's largest research institution, and as a place of higher learning continues to enrich the lives of its students by providing outstanding education; and

     WHEREAS, since its founding in 1889 as New Mexico's flagship university, the university of New Mexico has been a home for all students who desire to better themselves and their communities; and

     WHEREAS, the research conducted by the political science department of the university of New Mexico is published in academic journals across the nation with the goal of informing policy experts in creating the best possible law for United States residents; and

     WHEREAS, the department of political science of the university of New Mexico provides numerous programs that help students work in, and learn from, the political environment of New Mexico, with each program engaging the passions of the students and empowering them to participate in the political process; and

     WHEREAS, graduates of the department of political science have gone on to serve the state in many professional capacities, inspiring students studying under this program to use the knowledge they have gained to work for the advancement of all people; and

     WHEREAS, the twenty-ninth governor of New Mexico, Gary Johnson, is a graduate of the department of political science; and

     WHEREAS, the twenty-sixth secretary of state of New Mexico, Maggie Toulouse Oliver, is also a graduate of the department of political science; and

     WHEREAS, United States Senator Fred R. Harris, of Oklahoma, taught in the department of political science after his tenure in the United States senate and created a program that allows students to gain the unique experience of working in federal congressional and senate offices; and

     WHEREAS, the department of political science includes a program that allows students to work for legislators in local government and to grow both as professionals and as people through the mentorship of local politicians; and

     WHEREAS, the department of political science employs a number of distinguished professors who inspire future generations and instill a sense of respect for and an understanding of the importance of government; and

     WHEREAS, the department of political science is invested in the success of its students and supports students who have a passion for politics and a desire to learn; and

     WHEREAS, the education of future generations in the study of political science is vital to the continued success of the nation and state government; and

     WHEREAS, the opportunities provided by the department of political science allow students to have an impact in their local communities and encourage the importance of activism not only in professional capacities but in their daily lives; and

     WHEREAS, the continued development of a passion for policy and its impact on communities is vital to the growth and development of New Mexico and the nation, and free people must always first and foremost be educated people; and

     WHEREAS, the department of political science ensures that every voice is heard and works to mediate opposing views so that discussions lead to a better appreciation for bipartisanship and peaceful debate;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of political science of the university of New Mexico be recognized for the valuable contributions it makes in educating future policymakers; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the chair of the department of political science of the university of New Mexico and to Adrian Schmitt, a junior at the university of New Mexico majoring in philosophy and political science, who brought forth this memorial to bring attention to the department of political science and its contributions.
