MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR GRANTS TO STATE INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO DEVELOP A PRE-SERVICE TEACHER COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAM.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

SECTION 1. APPROPRIATION.--One million dollars ($1,000,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the higher education department for expenditure in fiscal year 2021 to provide grants to state institutions of higher education to develop a pre-service teacher computer science education program that will address the computer science teacher shortage in New Mexico. To address equity, the pre-service teacher computer science education grants shall require recipients to identify opportunities for partnership opportunities between school districts and colleges or schools of education at the state institutions of higher education to create direct pathways for computer science teachers in high-need schools. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2021 shall revert to the general fund.
