A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF MAGNET SCHOOLS IN NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, there are approximately four thousand three hundred forty magnet or theme-based schools in the United States serving nearly three million five hundred thousand students; and

     WHEREAS, the Albuquerque public school district has nineteen magnet schools serving five thousand five hundred students; and

     WHEREAS, eleven other school districts in New Mexico have magnet schools; and

     WHEREAS, magnet schools are the original form of public school choice and have played an integral role in promoting racial and socioeconomic integration since the landmark United States supreme court decision of Brown v. Board of Education; and

     WHEREAS, magnet schools are based on five pillars of success: diversity, innovative curriculum and professional development, academic excellence, high-quality instructional systems and family and community partnerships; and

     WHEREAS, students who attend racially and socioeconomically diverse magnet schools have higher levels of twenty-first century skills and capabilities, such as critical thinking and communicating across different cultures; and

     WHEREAS, students who attend racially and socioeconomically diverse magnet schools are also more likely to reject stereotypes, adopt multiple perspectives, develop cross-racial friendships and seek out diverse colleges and universities, workplaces and neighborhoods; and

     WHEREAS, theme-based magnet schools provide families with a wide variety of public school choice options that nourish the individual talents and abilities of all students and prepare students for college and future careers through innovative teaching and learning; and

     WHEREAS, magnet schools connect today's learning with future opportunities through industry partnerships, workforce connections and community support for students in all grades;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the contributions that magnet schools have made toward student excellence in New Mexico be recognized; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to magnet schools of America, the superintendent of the Albuquerque public school district, the superintendent of the Roswell independent school district, the superintendent of the Clovis municipal school district, the superintendent of the Las Cruces public school district, the superintendent of the Gadsden independent school district, the superintendent of the Carlsbad municipal school district, the superintendent of the Deming public school district, the superintendent of the Farmington municipal school district, the superintendent of the Santa Fe public school district, the superintendent of the Taos municipal school district and the chief executive officer of middle college high school.
