A MEMORIAL

SUPPORTING THE NEW MEXICO SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS AND ITS CREATION OF A REPORT IDENTIFYING ITS ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE LAST TEN YEARS AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.

 

     WHEREAS, in 2008, the New Mexico legislature passed Senate Bill 34, which enacted the New Mexico School for the Arts Act, allowing for the creation of a statewide, residential state-chartered charter high school for the arts; and

     WHEREAS, in January 2009, the public education commission issued a charter to the New Mexico school for the arts, and the school opened in August 2010 and has served seven hundred eighty students from eighteen counties and sixty-eight communities across the state since its inception; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico school for the arts has operated a residential program since August 2010 that provides access to the school to students statewide and has allowed one hundred students to attend the school under the residential program since its inception; and

     WHEREAS, in 2016, the United States department of education designated the New Mexico school for the arts as a national blue ribbon school, one of the nation's highest honors in education, for its success in closing the achievement gap; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico school for the arts has consistently earned the highest school rankings for academic success from the public education department for the past ten years; and

     WHEREAS, in celebration of its tenth anniversary, the New Mexico school for the arts will convene a group to create a report of the school's accomplishments and plans for its continued success and sustainability;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the house of representatives recognize the accomplishments of the New Mexico school for the arts as a school of excellence in arts and academics for students statewide; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the speaker of the house of representatives be requested to nominate two members of the house of representatives to support the New Mexico school for the arts in its efforts to complete its report of accomplishments and future plans; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of the report be submitted to the New Mexico legislative council when completed; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the co-chairs of the New Mexico legislative council, the secretary of public education and the president of the governing council of the New Mexico school for the arts.
