A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A NEW INDIAN CENTER IN GALLUP, NEW MEXICO; REQUESTING THE INDIAN AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT TO STUDY THIS OPPORTUNITY AND PROVIDE A REPORT.

 

     WHEREAS, the city of Gallup has a long history of being an epicenter of Native American culture, especially for Navajo and Zuni people; and

     WHEREAS, for several decades, the city of Gallup had a center for visitors to and neighbors of the Navajo Nation and the Pueblo of Zuni to rest, share and celebrate the Native American cultures; and

     WHEREAS, the previous Indian center in the city of Gallup has been closed for many years; and

     WHEREAS, residents of the area would like to once again plan and develop a center similar to the Farmington Indian center to provide various services and activities; and

     WHEREAS, a new Indian center in the city of Gallup could be a place to share, participate, learn and preserve rich cultural heritage by offering a variety of cultural showcases and educational activities and opportunities;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the Indian affairs department be requested to initiate a study of the feasibility of a new Gallup Indian center and seek advice from the Pueblo of Zuni and Navajo Nation regarding such a center; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of Indian affairs, the mayor of the city of Gallup, the chair of the McKinley county board of county commissioners, the governor of the Pueblo of Zuni and the president of the Navajo Nation.
