A MEMORIAL

HONORING REPRESENTATIVE DAYMON ELY AND RECOGNIZING HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, Representative Daymon Ely, a Democrat, represents district 23, which covers Bernalillo and Sandoval counties; and

     WHEREAS, this is Representative Ely's third term in office, having been first elected in 2017; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely is a member of the house judiciary committee, house rules and order of business committee and house government, elections and Indian affairs committee; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely is the co-chair of the interim legislative ethics committee and a member of the New Mexico legislative council; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely also served as the house parliamentarian from 2017 to 2021; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely is a former Sandoval county commissioner, serving from 2000 to 2004; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 11, 1957 but soon after moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he grew up; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely was raised by his parents, Herb, a former chairman of the Arizona Democratic party and a practicing civil rights attorney, and E-Layn, a homemaker who dedicated her life to provide for the family; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely's progressive roots stem from his parents who taught him at an early age that every person has a voice and that no one person deserves more than another; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely received his bachelor of arts degree in history from Arizona state university in 1979, where he graduated with honors, followed by his juris doctorate from the same institution in 1982; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely chose to follow his father's footsteps in practicing law because he saw how important the law can be in the lives of those who most need help; and

     WHEREAS, having been a lawyer for thirty-four years and still practicing today, Representative Ely has focused his career on holding negligent attorneys accountable for their actions; and

     WHEREAS, as a trial attorney, Representative Ely has worked on cases to ensure justice for those who need a voice; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely's parliamentary wit is evident from his adoption of the phrase "often wrong, never in doubt", and he loves being in the midst of legislative action; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely can always be relied on to bring laughter to challenging situations and joy to otherwise dark moments; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely enjoys unraveling complex problems and in doing so, learning from those around him; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely believes deeply in developing policy to improve the lives of New Mexicans and, because of that belief, always stands resolutely on his principles; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely is proud to leave legislating in the hands of trusted colleagues and looks forward to focusing on his highest priority, being a husband and father; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Ely's fondest memories of his legislative career are working with his legislative colleagues;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Representative Daymon Ely be recognized for his outstanding public service to the residents of New Mexico and his strong advocacy for the law; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Representative Daymon Ely.
