A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 8, 2023 "EQUALITY NEW MEXICO DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND COMMEMORATING THE THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF EQUALITY NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, in 1993, a group of New Mexicans gathered around a coffee table to organize toward equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals; and

     WHEREAS, the coalition for equality in New Mexico was created for the well-being of all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals across New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the coalition for equality in New Mexico revised the organization's name to equality New Mexico and has educated legislators, educators, government departments and residents across the state about the lives and beauty of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer New Mexicans; and

     WHEREAS, the dedication and persistence of advocates led with New Mexico values ensured New Mexico would respect and validate same-sex marriages; and

     WHEREAS, equality New Mexico has advocated for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer seniors and elders in New Mexico, their safety in their golden years and their unique health care needs; and

     WHEREAS, three decades of continued advocacy for equality and liberation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer New Mexicans have been instrumental in passing the New Mexico Civil Rights Act, the Safe Schools for All Students Act and the Gender-Free Restrooms Act; and

     WHEREAS, equality New Mexico has worked in coalition to repeal harmful conversion therapy and defeat anti-transgender bills; and

     WHEREAS, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer New Mexicans and their families have benefited from the ongoing efforts of equality New Mexico;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 8, 2023 be declared "Equality New Mexico Day" in the house of representatives and that the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of equality New Mexico be commemorated; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to equality New Mexico.
