A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO INSTITUTE OF MINING AND TECHNOLOGY TO CONVENE A TASK FORCE TO STUDY AND QUANTIFY THE AMOUNT OF RARE EARTH MINERALS IN NEW MEXICO AND ASSESS WHETHER THAT AMOUNT WILL BE SUFFICIENT TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE STATE.

 

     WHEREAS, New Mexico is shifting its energy approach to use substantially more renewable energy technology; and

     WHEREAS, the rare earth minerals needed for renewable energy technology are limited in the state;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico institute of mining and technology be requested to convene a task force to study, quantify and prepare a report detailing the amount of rare earth minerals within the state and assessing whether that amount will be sufficient to meet the state's projected needs as the state's use of renewable energy technology increases; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the New Mexico institute of mining and technology be requested to complete the report and transmit a copy of the report to each member of the legislature by January 1, 2024; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the board of regents of and the president of the New Mexico institute of mining and technology.
