A MEMORIAL

DECLARING MARCH 9, 2023 "MOUNT TAYLOR QUADRATHLON DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, the Mount Taylor quadrathlon is more than a race, it is a bucket-list, multisport winter endurance party; and

     WHEREAS, every Presidents' day weekend, sports enthusiasts converged on Grants to participate in a bike, run, ski and snowshoe race; and

     WHEREAS, the Mount Taylor quadrathlon is a sport race up and back down the highest peak in northwestern New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, contestants are challenged to bike thirteen miles up the steep, paved road leading to Mount Taylor, then run an additional five miles on a snowpacked, gravel road before switching to a pair of cross-country skis and ascending two miles on a groomed trail; and

     WHEREAS, finally, racers strap on a pair of snowshoes and trek the final mile to the summit of Mount Taylor, five thousand four hundred feet higher than where they started; and

     WHEREAS, after catching their breath at the top, the racers turn around and brave the twenty-two-mile stretch again to get back to the finish line; and

     WHEREAS, the race is open to solo racers, teams and pairs; and

     WHEREAS, quad kids is a three-part children's race that takes place at the finish line while the adults are out on the mountain; and

     WHEREAS, kids ages three to twelve participate in a bike ride, obstacle course and run appropriate for their age; and

     WHEREAS, the Mount Taylor quadrathlon organization members responsible for planning and hosting the race are:

     Isaac Atencio — president;

     Kendra Brown — vice president;

     Stephanie Gaines — treasurer;

     Amanda Valdez — secretary;

     board members: Roger Siegman, Terry Fletcher, Dhanielle Atencio and Maggie Edmiston; and

     transition leaders: Isaac Atencio — start finish, Roger Siegman — bike run, Shane Jake Valdez — run ski, Chad Gaines — ski snowshoe and Bobby Bassett — summit;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that recognition be extended to the Mount Taylor quadrathlon by declaring March 9, 2023 "Mount Taylor Quadrathlon Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the Mount Taylor quadrathlon organization.
