A JOINT MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 22, 2023 "SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE DAY" IN THE LEGISLATURE.

 

     WHEREAS, survivors of suicide is a nonprofit organization that offers support groups to serve the needs of people suffering the loss of a loved one by suicide; and

     WHEREAS, survivors of suicide holds ten to twelve meetings a month in Albuquerque and Santa Fe; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to in-person meetings, survivors of suicide also holds virtual meetings with attendees from across New Mexico and even outside the United States; and

     WHEREAS, support groups are led by peers who have experience in suicide issues and who have been trained to facilitate; and

     WHEREAS, survivors of suicide meetings are attended by both recent and long-time survivors, who benefit from the sharing of experiences and approaches to the loss through suicide; and

     WHEREAS, meetings are also frequently attended by mental health professionals who offer various perspectives on unexpected death, grief and bereavement, guilt, responsibility and mourning; and

     WHEREAS, it is important to remove the stigma of suicide for survivors and to speak out about mental health issues and suicide; and

     WHEREAS, survivors of suicide volunteers are dedicated to providing information and support to assist in the grieving and healing process;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 22, 2023 be declared "Survivors of Suicide Day" in the legislature; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to survivors of suicide.
