A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING COWBOYS FOR CANCER RESEARCH FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO CANCER RESEARCH IN NEW MEXICO AND DECLARING MARCH 10, 2023 "COWBOYS FOR CANCER RESEARCH DAY" IN THE SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, cowboys for cancer research was established in 1982 and is the largest cancer research fundraiser in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the money raised by cowboys for cancer research stays in New Mexico and is used for cancer research projects in the state; and

     WHEREAS, cowboys for cancer research started as a humble team roping fundraiser in Las Cruces that honored Alma Cohorn, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, whose life had tragically been taken by this awful disease in 1981; and

     WHEREAS, the Alma Cohorn memorial/cowboys for cancer research endowment was established in 1999 to support cancer research at the university of New Mexico comprehensive cancer center, which is the only national cancer institute-designated cancer center in a five-hundred-mile radius; and

     WHEREAS, cowboys for cancer research has made donations to the university of New Mexico comprehensive cancer center for more than forty years, and one hundred percent of the money that has been donated has gone toward cancer research; and

     WHEREAS, the cowboys for cancer research endowed fund was established in 2011 to support cancer research and community outreach projects at New Mexico state university; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico state university partners with the university of New Mexico comprehensive cancer center and the Fred Hutchinson cancer center to conduct cutting-edge cancer research; and

     WHEREAS, the two endowment funds are worth a total of five million one hundred thousand dollars ($5,100,000); and

     WHEREAS, Denny and Geraldine Calhoun, co-executive directors of cowboys for cancer research, have been involved in the charitable efforts at cowboys for cancer research since its inception, and they continue to contribute their resources and knowledge in the hope of finding a cure for cancer;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that cowboys for cancer research be recognized for the contributions that it has made to cancer research in New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that March 10, 2023 be declared "Cowboys for Cancer Research Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to cowboys for cancer research.
