A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 4, 2023 "M.T.O. SHAHMAGHSOUDI SCHOOL OF ISLAMIC SUFISM DAY" IN THE SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, the diverse cultural, ethnic, racial and religious heritage of New Mexicans is a fundamental characteristic of the community and contributes greatly to the quality of life in the state; and

     WHEREAS, the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism in Albuquerque is an international nonprofit organization with a range of community, charitable and learning initiatives, such as interfaith efforts, disaster responses, Sufi concentration and meditation practices, Sufi psychology and arts and culture, including Quran study, music and youth mentorship and support; and

     WHEREAS, during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism saw a growing need in the most vulnerable, including the homeless, low-income families and the elderly; and

     WHEREAS, in Albuquerque, the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism was honored for the opportunity to give back with over five thousand items of personal protective equipment, such as sewn cotton masks and face shields for adults and children, that were donated to hospitals, nursing homes, community centers and homeless and refugee centers; and

     WHEREAS, one and eight-tenths tons of donated nonperishable food items were donated to local organizations; and

     WHEREAS, the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism has also been active throughout the pandemic with interfaith activities, including participation and presentations at interfaith dialogue events and hosting roundtable events highlighting important topics; and

     WHEREAS, the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism is an active participant in interfaith groups addressing sustainability and hunger; and

     WHEREAS, the school also holds volunteer events at various pantries, food drives and planting events hosted by the city of Albuquerque; and

     WHEREAS, the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism raises awareness of sustainability principles with events, such as recycled art projects on display at the Erna Fergusson public library and other recycling events; and

     WHEREAS, the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism has long been active in the community, whether by initiating interfaith dialogue to bring greater tolerance and understanding among different faiths or assisting those in need;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 4, 2023 be declared "M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi School of Islamic Sufism Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi school of Islamic Sufism in Albuquerque.
