A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE PENASCO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT TO TRANSFER THE ESCUELITA BUILDING IN LAS TRAMPAS TO THE LAS TRAMPAS MUTUAL DOMESTIC WATER CONSUMERS ASSOCIATION.

 

     WHEREAS, the "escuelita building" in Las Trampas is a small single-room building with electricity but no other utility service connections; and

     WHEREAS, on September 4, 1914, Pablo Martinez sold the escuelita building to the school board of district twenty-three of Taos county for one hundred twenty-five dollars ($125); and

     WHEREAS, the escuelita building was operated as a common school for the Las Trampas community from the fall of 1914 until 1961; and

     WHEREAS, since 1961, the Las Trampas mutual domestic water consumers association has leased the escuelita building; and

     WHEREAS, the Las Trampas mutual domestic water consumers association uses the escuelita building as a meeting space and makes the building available as a meeting space for the Las Trampas acequia commission and the Santo Tomas Apostol del Rio de las Trampas land grant-merced; and

     WHEREAS, the escuelita building is used as needed as a community center for fiestas, youth activities and other social gatherings in the Las Trampas community; and

     WHEREAS, since 1961, the Las Trampas mutual domestic water consumers association has assumed responsibility for the costs of electric service, maintenance and improvements for the escuelita building; and

     WHEREAS, the escuelita building is currently owned by the Penasco independent school district;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the Penasco independent school district be requested to transfer the escuelita building in Las Trampas to the Las Trampas mutual domestic water consumers association; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the school board of the Penasco independent school district and to the president of the board of directors of the Las Trampas mutual domestic water consumers association.
