A JOINT RESOLUTION

PROPOSING TO AMEND ARTICLE 2, SECTION 6 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW MEXICO TO ALLOW MUNICIPALITIES AND COUNTIES TO REGULATE FIREARMS IN A MANNER THAT IS MORE RESTRICTIVE THAN STATE LAW.

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. It is proposed to amend Article 2, Section 6 of the constitution of New Mexico to read:

     "No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes, but nothing herein shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons; [No] provided that a municipality or county [shall] may regulate [in any way] an incident of the right to keep and bear arms in a manner that is more restrictive than state law."

     SECTION 2. The amendment proposed by this resolution shall be submitted to the people for their approval or rejection at the next general election or at any special election prior to that date that may be called for that purpose.
