WILLIAMS | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| | 0011| AN ACT | 0012| MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO ESTABLISH A SCHOOL-TO-WORK SYSTEM IN | 0013| NEW MEXICO EDUCATION. | 0014| | 0015| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO: | 0016| Section 1. APPROPRIATION.-- | 0017| A. One hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) is | 0018| appropriated from the general fund to the state department of | 0019| public education for expenditure in fiscal year 1997 to | 0020| establish a statewide school-to-work system that: | 0021| (1) facilitates long-range planning for the | 0022| school-to-work system, including plans to ensure financial | 0023| stability of the system; | 0024| (2) creates working relationships between | 0025| schools and the business community to provide positive | 0001| opportunities for students in the workforce, including in this | 0002| process representatives of government, labor, education and | 0003| business and industry as well as student representatives and | 0004| others representing the interests of equal opportunity and | 0005| gender equality in the workplace; | 0006| (3) provides for a school-based educational | 0007| system that integrates technology, training in the utilization | 0008| of workplace resources and skills development to prepare | 0009| students for the challenges of the workplace; | 0010| (4) establishes procedures for assisting in the | 0011| transition of students into the workplace, a job training | 0012| program or a post-secondary educational institution; | 0013| (5) coordinates all federal and state efforts | 0014| regarding the school-to-work system, provides development and | 0015| training and encourages procedures for participation in the | 0016| school-to-work system; and | 0017| (6) ensures that the school-to-work system is | 0018| established and supported in school districts and communities by | 0019| emphasizing and encouraging job training, job placement, | 0020| mentoring services, community involvement by students, career | 0021| counseling and placement and the integration of academic and | 0022| vocational education, as well as student employment with | 0023| community businesses to encourage continuing education and | 0024| skills development. | 0025| B. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining | 0001| at the end of fiscal year 1997 shall revert to the general fund.
