0012|     MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR ACTIVITIES COMMEMORATING THE
    |
0013|     FOUNDING OF NEW MEXICO TO BE CELEBRATED IN THE CITY OF
    |
0014|     ALBUQUERQUE LOCATED IN BERNALILLO COUNTY; DECLARING AN
    |
0015|     EMERGENCY.

0017|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0018|       Section 1.  APPROPRIATION.--Three hundred thousand dollars
    |
0019|     ($300,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the office
    |
0020|     of cultural affairs for expenditure in fiscal years 1996 and
    |
0021|     1997 for the purpose of commemorating the founding of New
    |
0022|     Mexico, seven years before Jamestown and twenty-two years before
    |
0023|     Plymouth.  The cuartocentennial, 1598-1998, will memorialize the
    |
0024|     forming of the first continuous settlement composed of people
    |
0025|     from the old world and the new world within the boundaries of
    |
0001|     the continental United States.  The descendants of the first
    |
0002|     Americans are still living where they were joined by the second
    |
0003|     Americans that memorable day on the eleventh of August 1598 at
    |
0004|     Okhe pueblo, which is called San Juan pueblo today.  Any
    |
0005|     unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of
    |
0006|     fiscal year 1997 shall revert to the general fund.
    |
0007|       Section 2.  EMERGENCY.--It is necessary for the public
    |
0008|     peace, health and safety that this act take effect immediately.
