0012| MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TO INVESTIGATE

0013| WHETHER PRICE FIXING OF ATTORNEYS' FEES EXISTS IN NEW MEXICO.

0015| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

0016| Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Twenty-five thousand dollars
|
0017| ($25,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the attorney
|
0018| general for expenditure in fiscal year 1997 for the purpose of
|
0019| investigating whether price fixing or antitrust violations exist
|
0020| in the legal profession in New Mexico. The attorney general
|
0021| shall investigate whether certain ethical rules restrict
|
0022| competition, whether attorneys engage in anticompetitive actions
|
0023| to avoid price competition and whether it is appropriate for
|
0024| lawyers to restrict entry into their profession. The attorney
|
0025| general is encouraged to use non-attorneys in the investigation
|
0001| and to request voluntary disclosure of fees, salaries and
|
0002| profits from attorneys statewide. Any unexpended or
|
0003| unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 1997
|
0004| shall revert to the general fund.
