0012| MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO SUPPORT PUBLIC SERVICE LEARNING

0013| INITIATIVES.

0015| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
|
0016| Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--Four hundred thousand dollars
|
0017| ($400,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state
|
0018| department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year
|
0019| 1997 for the purpose of coordinating, supporting and monitoring
|
0020| public service learning opportunities and activities in the
|
0021| public schools to enable young people to make significant
|
0022| contributions to the welfare of the community by participating
|
0023| in community-based organizations and individual initiatives.
|
0024| All students, including students with disabilities, must be
|
0025| afforded public service learning opportunities. The state
|
0001| department of public education shall collaborate with the
|
0002| commission on higher education to ensure involvement of post-secondary institutions and with the New Mexico commission for
|
0003| national and community service to ensure coordination and
|
0004| utilization of federal Community Services Act of 1974 funds.
|
0005| Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of
|
0006| fiscal year 1997 shall revert to the general fund.
