0006| CENTER AND THE NEW MEXICO PUBLIC INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP, KNOWN FOR

0007| THEIR ETHNIC, CULTURE-BASED, CIVIC AND SOCIAL STUDENT SERVICES AT THE
    |
0008| UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO.

0010|      WHEREAS, the legislature celebrates and supports New Mexico's
    |
0011| diversity, and acknowledges that ethnic and racial diversity
    |
0012| contributes to academic excellence and enhances classroom discourse;
    |
0013| and
    |
0014|      WHEREAS, African-American student services, American Indian
    |
0015| student services, el centro de la raza, the women's resource center
    |
0016| and the New Mexico public interest research group have been on the
    |
0017| campus for many years serving the interests and aspirations of the
    |
0018| student population; and
    |
0019|      WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico graduates more minority
    |
0020| students than any other university in the state, including the highest
    |
0021| student enrollment of ethnic, minority and women at a four-year
    |
0022| research institution in the nation; and
    |
0023|      WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico actively applies for and
    |
0024| receives from the United States department of education the status of
    |
0025| minority institution to benefit it for federal funding exclusive to
    |
0001| this category of higher education institution; and
    |
0002|      WHEREAS, tuition pays for services for all people; and 
    |
0003|      WHEREAS, ethnic-, culture-, minority-, gender-based, civic and
    |
0004| social student services are essential to the academic mission of the
    |
0005| university of New Mexico in preparing New Mexicans beyond the year
    |
0006| 2000;

0007|      NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF
    |
0008| NEW MEXICO that the board of regents of the university of New Mexico
    |
0009| affirm to maintain ethnic-, culture-, minority-, gender-based, civic
    |
0010| and social student service departments; and 
    |
0011|      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0012| transmitted to the members of the board of regents of the
    |
0013| university of New Mexico.
