0011|     RELATING TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS; AMENDING A PROVISION OF LAW

0012|     REGARDING EXCUSAL OF STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL FOR THE PURPOSE OF

0013|     PARTICIPATING IN RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION.

0015|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0016|          Section 1.  Section 22-12-3 NMSA 1978 (being Laws 1971,
    |
0017|     Chapter 238, Section 1) is amended to read:
    |
0018|          "22-12-3.  <u>RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION EXCUSAL</u>.--Any student
    |
0019|     may, subject to the approval of the local school board, be
    |
0020|     excused from school to participate in religious instruction for
    |
0021|     not more than one <s>[hour]</s> <u>class period</u> each school day with
    |
0022|     the written consent of his parents at a time period not in
    |
0023|     conflict with the academic program of the school.  The local
    |
0024|     school board and its employees shall not assume responsibility
    |
0025|     for the religious <s>[instructions]</s> <u>instruction</u> or permit
    |
0001|     <s>[them]</s> <u>it</u> to be conducted on school property."
    |
0002|          Section 2.  EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the
    |
0003|     provisions of this act is July 1, 1997.
