0011|     MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO PROVIDE ADULT LITERACY SERVICES

0012|     THROUGHOUT THE STATE.

0014|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0015|          Section 1.  APPROPRIATION.--One hundred thousand dollars
    |
0016|     ($100,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the library
    |
0017|     division of the office of cultural affairs for expenditure in
    |
0018|     fiscal year 1998 for the purpose of contracting with a
    |
0019|     statewide nonprofit adult literacy organization to promote,
    |
0020|     coordinate and enhance adult and intergenerational literacy
    |
0021|     opportunities and services throughout the state.  This
    |
0022|     appropriation is designated for training, technical assistance
    |
0023|     and operating support for volunteer-based literacy programs
    |
0024|     statewide, emphasizing activities designed to interrupt
    |
0025|     intergenerational cycles of illiteracy and to promote public
    |
0001|     and private partnerships to address the challenge of illiteracy
    |
0002|     in New Mexico.  Any unexpended or unencumbered balance
    |
0003|     remaining at the end of fiscal year 1998 shall revert to the
    |
0004|     general fund.
