0011|     RELATING TO CULTURE; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO PROVIDE FOR A

0012|     CUARTO CENTENARIO CELEBRATION OF CONTINUOUS HISPANIC PRESENCE

0013|     IN THE UNITED STATES; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.

0015|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0016|          Section 1.  LEGISLATIVE FINDINGS--HISPANIC PRESENCE IN
    |
0017|     NEW MEXICO.--The legislature of the state of New Mexico notes
    |
0018|     with pride that April 30, 1998 will mark the four hundredth
    |
0019|     anniversary of the founding of continuous European presence
    |
0020|     within the United States and the convergence of the Hispanic
    |
0021|     and Native American cultures and traditions.  This convergence
    |
0022|     will be commemorated with the cooperation of a wide variety of
    |
0023|     business, civic, cultural and governmental agencies in New
    |
0024|     Mexico as well as their counterparts in Mexico and Spain,
    |
0025|     bringing honor and attention to our state and region.  New
    |

0001|     Mexico's people of all ethnic and racial groups have made and
    |
0002|     continue to make major contributions to this productive
    |
0003|     history, and the legislature elects to contribute to the
    |
0004|     cuarto centenario project through exhibitions, publications,
    |
0005|     educational curriculum materials and media programs, as well
    |
0006|     as cultural and artistic endeavors of every type.
    |
0007|          Section 2.  APPROPRIATION--CUARTO CENTENARIO PROJECT--
    |
0008|     PURPOSE.--Eight hundred thousand dollars ($800,000) is
    |
0009|     appropriated from the general fund to the office of cultural
    |
0010|     affairs for expenditure in fiscal years 1998 and 1999 to
    |
0011|     provide support of the cuarto centenario project, to help
    |
0012|     commemorate four hundred years of diversity and richness
    |
0013|     produced and nurtured through our Hispanic and Native American
    |
0014|     cultures.  Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at
    |
0015|     the end of fiscal year 1999 shall revert to the general fund.
    |
0016|          Section 3.  EMERGENCY.--It is necessary for the public
    |
0017|     peace, health and safety that this act take effect
    |
0018|     immediately.
