0011|     REQUESTING THAT TEACHER TRAINING INSTITUTIONS BUILD INTO THEIR

0012|     CURRICULA A COMPONENT TO INSTILL THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHERS'

0013|     ROLES IN POLICY DEVELOPMENT.

0015|          WHEREAS, the family is the most important influence in a
    |
0016|     child's life; and
    |
0017|          WHEREAS, teachers are essential partners with the family
    |
0018|     in establishing the backbone of our society by serving in
    |
0019|     schools to formulate the education process; and
    |
0020|          WHEREAS, teachers impact the daily lives of children in
    |
0021|     the learning process; and
    |
0022|          WHEREAS, empowerment of individual teachers will have a
    |
0023|     positive effect on public school policy; and
    |
0024|          WHEREAS, there are sixteen thousand teachers in the
    |
0025|     professional ranks in New Mexico; and
    |

0001|          WHEREAS, schools are the center of educational and social

0002|     activity in most towns in New Mexico; and
    |
0003|          WHEREAS, parents, students, teachers, school personnel
    |
0004|     and extended family comprise the majority of the population of
    |
0005|     New Mexico; and
    |
0006|          WHEREAS, it is important that superintendents create
    |
0007|     empowering opportunities for teachers in their districts to
    |
0008|     engage in the policy and legislative process; and
    |
0009|          WHEREAS, the superintendent of public instruction plays
    |
0010|     an important role in encouraging local superintendents to
    |
0011|     support teachers' roles in the process;
    |
0012|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0013|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that teacher training institutions be
    |
0014|     requested to build into their curricula a component to instill
    |
0015|     in prospective teachers the importance of their roles in
    |
0016|     policy development; and
    |
0017|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0018|     transmitted to the superintendent of public instruction and to
    |
0019|     the teacher training institutions.
