0011|     IN PRAISE OF ARTESIA'S MAYOR ERNEST THOMPSON.

0013|          WHEREAS, the Honorable Ernest Thompson has been mayor of
    |
0014|     Artesia since 1972, perhaps the longest running mayoral tenure
    |
0015|     in New Mexico history; and
    |
0016|          WHEREAS, at almost eighty-seven years of age, he may be
    |
0017|     the second-oldest mayor in New Mexico history; and
    |
0018|          WHEREAS, a litany of the accomplishments of his
    |
0019|     administrations would fill pages, just for the capital
    |
0020|     improvements; and
    |
0021|          WHEREAS, he has always been active in civic, church and
    |
0022|     government endeavors, serving as past president of the 
    |
0023|     Artesia rotary club, the New Mexico gideons, the Artesia
    |
0024|     quarterback club and the parents and boosters club and has
    |
0025|     been active in boy scouts of America; and
    |

0001|          WHEREAS, he is the recipient of the boy scouts of
    |
0002|     America's silver beaver award; and
    |
0003|          WHEREAS, he is a past president and vice president of the
    |
0004|     New Mexico municipal league and has been a member of that
    |
0005|     organization and the national league of cities since 1973; and
    |
0006|          WHEREAS, Mayor Thompson, a native of central Texas, has
    |
0007|     been a resident of the Artesia area since 1939 and retired in
    |
0008|     1976 from the Navajo refining company after twenty-five years
    |
0009|     of service; and
    |
0010|          WHEREAS, he has been married to the former Grace King for
    |
0011|     fifty-five years, and has one son, Robert, of San Diego,
    |
0012|     California, and two grandchildren; 
    |
0013|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0014|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Mayor Ernest Thompson of Artesia be
    |
0015|     congratulated on his long service to his community and his
    |
0016|     state; and
    |
0017|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
    |
0018|     transmitted to the Honorable Ernest Thompson, mayor of
    |
0019|     Artesia.
