0001| HOUSE JOINT MEMORIAL 26 | 0002| 43RD LEGISLATURE - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - SECOND SESSION, 1998 | 0003| INTRODUCED BY | 0004| MIMI STEWART | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING THE GOVERNOR AND THE SECRETARY OF STATE TO ISSUE | 0012| AND PROCLAIM THE OFFICIAL TARTAN OF NEW MEXICO. | 0013| | 0014| WHEREAS, many New Mexicans of Scottish descent have made | 0015| significant contributions to the culture of New Mexico; and | 0016| WHEREAS, the Saint Andrew Scottish society of New Mexico | 0017| solicited tartan pattern designs and subsequently held a vote | 0018| and selected a tartan from thirty-one submissions to be called | 0019| the New Mexico land of enchantment tartan; and | 0020| WHEREAS, the official tartan is a distinct tartan that | 0021| may be worn by any resident or friend of New Mexico whether or | 0022| not of Scottish heritage; and | 0023| WHEREAS, the official state tartan is comprised of a | 0024| pattern designed from the tartan of our first territorial | 0025| governor, James S. Calhoun; and |

0001| WHEREAS, the deep blue and green are symbolic of the | 0002| colors of our first governor's tartan; and | 0003| WHEREAS, the gold is reflective of our New Mexican | 0004| desert; and | 0005| WHEREAS, the brilliance of the red symbolizes the red in | 0006| our flag and the red stripe in the tartan of our first | 0007| territorial governor James S. Calhoun; and | 0008| WHEREAS, to officially register a tartan with the | 0009| Scottish Tartan society in Pitlochry, Scotland, legislative | 0010| action is required; | 0011| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0012| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor and the secretary of | 0013| state be requested to issue and proclaim the official tartan | 0014| as the tartan having a pattern or sett consisting of primary | 0015| blocks of deep blue and green separated by bands of red and | 0016| two bands of gold based on the ancient Colquhoun tartan, the | 0017| tartan of our first territorial governor; and | 0018| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be | 0019| transmitted to the governor and to the secretary of state. | 0020|  |
