SALAZAR | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| SUPPORTING LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LABORATORY'S SCHOOL-TO-WORK | 0012| EFFORTS. | 0013| | 0014| WHEREAS, Los Alamos national laboratory, the university | 0015| of California, the United States department of energy and | 0016| their business partners have made significant efforts to | 0017| stimulate economic activity in northern New Mexico; and | 0018| WHEREAS, part of that economic activity has resulted in | 0019| the development of the Los Alamos research park, which will | 0020| attract high technology businesses to northern New Mexico and | 0021| generate an increased number of job choices; and | 0022| WHEREAS, the state of New Mexico recently allocated | 0023| seventeen million dollars ($17,000,000) to promote work force | 0024| development, which is an essential component of successful | 0025| economic development measures; and |

0001| WHEREAS, Los Alamos national laboratory has been actively | 0002| conducting educational work force development programs at | 0003| elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels for many years | 0004| to help increase student interest in math, science and | 0005| technology; and | 0006| WHEREAS, Los Alamos national laboratory also works | 0007| directly with regional two-year community colleges to help | 0008| develop curriculum and to educate faculty in areas of | 0009| technology useful to the laboratory work force and beneficial | 0010| to citizens seeking employment with the laboratory; and | 0011| WHEREAS, the laboratory also hires over five hundred | 0012| undergraduate student interns each summer, providing them with | 0013| experience in the fields of math, science and engineering and | 0014| many of those students return after graduation to work | 0015| permanently for the laboratory; | 0016| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0017| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that schools, colleges and nonprofit | 0018| entities in northern New Mexico that receive work force | 0019| development funds coordinate their efforts in working with the | 0020| laboratory and its business partners to assess the types of | 0021| employment available through the laboratory, the skills | 0022| necessary for that employment and to continue nurturing | 0023| interests of students from kindergarten through high school in | 0024| these jobs and skills; and | 0025| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that regional higher education |

0001| institutions in northern New Mexico, particularly northern New | 0002| Mexico community college, Santa Fe community college and the | 0003| university of New Mexico at Los Alamos continue to focus their | 0004| curriculum development on skills and knowledge that will lead | 0005| directly to employment at the laboratory; and | 0006| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the regional higher education | 0007| institutions and Los Alamos national laboratory present the | 0008| efforts of their cooperation and curriculum coordination to | 0009| the economic development, science and technology committee no | 0010| later than October 1, 1998; and | 0011| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be | 0012| sent to the presidents of northern New Mexico community | 0013| college, Santa Fe community college and the university of New | 0014| Mexico at Los Alamos, the director of Los Alamos national | 0015| laboratory, the commission on higher education and the | 0016| legislative education study committee. | 0017|  |
