0011|     REQUESTING THE OBSERVATION OF "READ ACROSS AMERICA", A

0012|     NATIONAL CELEBRATION, AND DECLARING MARCH 2, 1998 AS READ

0013|     ACROSS AMERICA DAY.

0015|          WHEREAS, the New Mexico legislature stands firmly
    |
0016|     committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for our
    |
0017|     students' future academic success, their preparation for
    |
0018|     America's jobs of the future and their ability to compete in a
    |
0019|     global economy; and
    |
0020|          WHEREAS, this legislature has provided significant
    |
0021|     leadership in the area of community involvement in the
    |
0022|     education of our youth, grounded in the principle that
    |
0023|     educational investment is key to the state's well-being and
    |
0024|     long-term quality of life; and
    |
0025|          WHEREAS, "Read Across America" is a national celebration
    |

0001|     of Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2, sponsored by the national

0002|     education association, promoting reading and adult involvement
    |
0003|     in the education of our state's students;
    |
0004|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
    |
0005|     STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the citizens of New Mexico ensure
    |
0006|     that every child is in a safe place reading together with a
    |
0007|     caring adult on the evening of March 2, 1998; and
    |
0008|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the New Mexico legislature
    |
0009|     declares March 2, 1998 as Read Across America day in New
    |
0010|     Mexico; and
    |
0011|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body enthusiastically
    |
0012|     endorses "Read Across America" and recommits itself to engage
    |
0013|     in programs and activities to make New Mexico's children the
    |
0014|     best readers in the world.
