"DUB" WILLIAMS | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| DIRECTING THE NEW MEXICO VETERANS' SERVICE COMMISSION TO | 0012| INVESTIGATE THE PROPER PROCEDURES AND PURSUE THE DEDICATION OF | 0013| THE MILITARY CEMETERY IN FORT STANTON AS AN OFFICIAL ALTERNATE | 0014| RESTING SITE FOR THE BURIAL OF VETERANS. | 0015| | 0016| WHEREAS, as we come to the end of the twentieth century, | 0017| our nation's military cemeteries are increasingly filled to | 0018| capacity with the nation's war heroes; and | 0019| WHEREAS, in New Mexico, many war veterans choose to be | 0020| buried at the Santa Fe national cemetery; and | 0021| WHEREAS, the Santa Fe national cemetery has been forced | 0022| to continually expand to accommodate these needs; and | 0023| WHEREAS, in the southern part of the state, Fort Stanton | 0024| has increasingly been utilized as the final resting place for | 0025| many veterans, a role that the merchant marine and military |

Stanton has filled for nearly one | 0002| hundred years; and | 0003| WHEREAS, given the role this cemetery has played in the | 0004| lives of so many veterans, it should be officially designated | 0005| as a national cemetery; | 0006| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0007| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico veterans' service | 0008| commission investigate the proper procedures and pursue the | 0009| designation of the merchant marine and military memorial | 0010| cemetery at Ft. Stanton as a national cemetery and alternate | 0011| resting place for New Mexico veterans; and | 0012| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be | 0013| transmitted to the New Mexico veterans' service commission and | 0014| members of New Mexico's congressional delegation. | 0015|  | 0016| | 0017| | 0018| | 0019| |
