0001| SENATE JOINT MEMORIAL 28 | 0002| 43RD LEGISLATURE - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - SECOND SESSION, 1998 | 0003| INTRODUCED BY | 0004| JOHN PINTO | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING THE STATE HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT TO | 0012| STUDY WIDENING UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 666 FROM YAH-TA-HEY TO | 0013| FOUR LANES. | 0014| | 0015| WHEREAS, United States highway 666 connects Gallup and | 0016| Shiprock, New Mexico; and | 0017| WHEREAS, between Yah-Ta-Hey and Shiprock, United States | 0018| highway 666 has only one northbound lane and one southbound | 0019| lane; and | 0020| WHEREAS, United States highway 666 is heavily traveled by | 0021| members of the Navajo nation and other state residents; and | 0022| WHEREAS, the commercial interstate truck traffic is | 0023| especially heavy on United States highway 666; and | 0024| WHEREAS, many vehicle collisions occur on this stretch of | 0025| highway, including a high number of head-on collisions, and |

0001| many collisions from vehicles merging into traffic or | 0002| attempting to cross the highway; and | 0003| WHEREAS, many pedestrian injuries occur because vehicles | 0004| are traveling at high rates of speed; and | 0005| WHEREAS, a divided four-lane highway will cut down | 0006| dramatically on the number of deaths, injuries and collisions | 0007| occurring on this stretch of road; | 0008| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0009| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state highway and transportation | 0010| department be requested to study the feasibility of and need | 0011| for widening United States highway 666 between Yah-Ta-Hey and | 0012| Shiprock to four lanes; and | 0013| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be | 0014| transmitted to the secretary of highway and transportation. | 0015|  |
