0011|     REQUESTING THE STATE HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT TO

0012|     HELP PROTECT OUR SCHOOL CHILDREN BY STUDYING THE NEED FOR A

0013|     TRAFFIC CONTROL LIGHT AT THE INTERSECTION OF UNITED STATES
    |
0014|     HIGHWAY 666 AND NAVAJO NATION ROUTES N5 AND N19.

0016|          WHEREAS, the safety of New Mexico's school children is of
    |
0017|     primary importance at all levels of government and society;
    |
0018|     and
    |
0019|          WHEREAS, one of the many areas of the state highway
    |
0020|     system in the four corners region that is dangerous and needs
    |
0021|     more attention to safety measures is along United States
    |
0022|     highway 666; and
    |
0023|          WHEREAS, the congestion at the intersection of United
    |
0024|     States highway 666 and Navajo Nation routes N5 and N19
    |
0025|     presents daily threats to the safety of school children and
    |

0001|     other New Mexicans traveling in the area; and
    |
0002|          WHEREAS, several times each day the intersection is
    |
0003|     filled with school buses going to and from the various public
    |
0004|     schools in the area, exposing New Mexico school children to
    |
0005|     dangerous traffic conditions and personal safety risks; and
    |
0006|          WHEREAS, the intersection provides the primary access to
    |
0007|     a large convenience store and refueling station; and
    |
0008|          WHEREAS, all the thoroughfares connecting at the
    |
0009|     intersection need widening and need various signs to reduce
    |
0010|     speed, warn of danger and congestion and aid pedestrian
    |
0011|     safety, as well as primary traffic control lights;
    |
0012|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
    |
0013|     OF NEW MEXICO that the state highway and transportation
    |
0014|     department give immediate attention to performing a traffic
    |
0015|     study to determine the extent and costs of making the
    |
0016|     intersection of United States highway 666 and Navajo routes N5
    |
0017|     and N19 safe for all citizens and traffic, especially school
    |
0018|     bus traffic; and
    |
0019|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
    |
0020|     sent to the state highway engineer and to each member of the
    |
0021|     state highway commission.
