AN ACT

MAKING APPROPRIATIONS FOR STATEWIDE PROGRAMS FOR THE MENTALLY ILL.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATIONS.--

A. One million seven hundred fifty thousand dollars ($1,750,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the department of health for expenditure in fiscal year 2000 to provide or contract for statewide programs for the mentally ill, including crisis intervention training for law enforcement personnel, jail diversion programs, crisis stabilization hospital beds, supervised housing and respite facilities and rent subsidies for independent living. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.

B. Two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($250,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the public defender department for expenditure in fiscal year 2000 to provide additional public defender services statewide to assist mentally ill persons and law enforcement personnel to avoid unnecessary and inappropriate incarceration. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.
