AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO PROVIDE CAREER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

Section 1. APPROPRIATION.--

A. One million dollars ($1,000,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the vocational education division of the state department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year 2000 to implement a career education opportunities system that prepares a qualified workforce to meet the needs of business and industry. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.

B. Money from the appropriation in Subsection A of this section shall be used to:

(1) implement or improve technical education programs that develop employability skills;

(2) prepare students to achieve national skills standards leading to two-year degrees or certifications in chosen high-tech career fields;

(3) upgrade or purchase equipment and materials meeting industry standards; and

(4) implement performance-based accountability reporting.

C. Funds shall be awarded to public high schools through a competitive application process based on criteria established by the vocational education division of the state department of public education.
