A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS TO WORK TOGETHER TO RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF DIVERSITY IN THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO.



WHEREAS, diversity is valued in New Mexico and is already practiced in the public and private sectors;

WHEREAS, the diversity leadership council was established three years ago by the private and public sectors as a tool to bring people together to improve diversity appreciation and to address issues of diversity;

WHEREAS, the diversity leadership council has developed a catalog of resources for diversity, the diversity video and training program and the diversity links newsletter;

WHEREAS, the public service company of New Mexico, Sandia national laboratories, intel, U.S. west communications, presbyterian healthcare, the commission on the status of women, McBride foundation, target, Albuquerque technical- vocational institute, PC support, inc., norwest bank, Klinger constructors, state farm insurance, the city of Albuquerque, united way of New Mexico, the university of New Mexico, ibis consulting group, the United States department of energy, the human services department, sun healthcare group, Albuquerque public schools and J.C. Penney continue to volunteer their services to work for diversity in the workplace;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that diversity be valued and that the goals and objectives of the diversity leadership council be appreciated and encouraged to continue; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the diversity leadership council encourage the study of diversity training curriculum for institutions of higher education, the public schools and the private sector; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the diversity leadership council develop a "training of trainers" program for a selected group of staff from the university of New Mexico, Albuquerque technical-vocational institute, Albuquerque public schools and diversity leadership council; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the diversity leadership council market the diversity training program through television, radio and newspaper; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the diversity leadership council initiate a membership recruitment program through a telephone campaign, letters and the media; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the diversity leadership council report its findings to the legislature by December 1, 1999; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the diversity leadership council.
