A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION AND THE NEW MEXICO ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION, IN CONJUNCTION WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS, TO ESTABLISH INTERMURAL ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS AND LETTERING IN ACADEMIC SUBJECTS.



WHEREAS, schools, students, parents and communities are ardent supporters of intermural sports teams, cheering them to victory and making school and community stars of winning athletes; and

WHEREAS, unless a student athlete is a one-in-a-million exception, intellectual achievement will likely serve him better over his lifetime; and

WHEREAS, academic achievement should be worthy of as much enthusiasm as that reserved for sports, and everyone should have the same chance to fervently support academic teams as they do athletic teams; and

WHEREAS, intermural academic competition, and the school spirit engendered by it, will be great motivation for students to excel in math, science, literature, history and other subjects, and those who participate should be able to letter in an academic subject in the same way athletes letter in football or basketball;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state department of public education and the New Mexico activities association, in conjunction with school districts, be requested to develop and implement intermural academic competition; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the program include the means for students to letter in one or more academic subjects; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the state department of public education and the New Mexico activities association.
