A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND MCKINLEY COUNTY TO WORK WITH THE RAMAH NAVAJO CHAPTER TO DEVELOP A FUNDING PACKAGE TO CONSTRUCT A WASTEWATER SYSTEM.



WHEREAS, the communities of Ramah and Pine Hill are located in Cibola county in the Ramah Navajo chapter; and

WHEREAS, Pine Hill, with a population of around three thousand, is in a remote area and is located at least sixty-five miles from other larger communities in Cibola or McKinley counties; and

WHEREAS, Pine Hill has the only wastewater system for miles around; and

WHEREAS, efforts have been made by the Ramah Navajo school board to obtain funding to develop a wastewater system for the Pine Hill and Ramah communities, including a health clinic, the Pine Hill school and the Pine Hill mini-mart, general store and laundromat, and even though the need has been assessed and a plan exists, no money is available to improve the existing inadequate wastewater system;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of environment, the county of McKinley and the Ramah Navajo chapter of Ramah work to develop a funding package for expanding and improving the wastewater system for the communities of Ramah and Pine Hill in Cibola county; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of environment, the county commission and county manager of McKinley county, the Ramah Navajo school board and the president of the Ramah Navajo chapter.
